Still recovering!

So far things are going very well with Sydney. She seems to be perking right up and for the most part not in too much pain. She isn't talking as much, and her appetite is not back to normal, but she is playing happily with Emily now and so we are hoping things continue this way for us!

A long but successful day

Sydney had her operation today.  We left the hosue at 6:45am and came home at 5:pm. The adenoids & tonsils were removed smoothly, and they decided judging from the fluid/pus that filled up in her ear in 2 weeks that she would benefit from tubes.  So they performed that as well.  The doctor said the adenoids were incredibly large and almost completely blocked off her nasal airways.  He is hopeful that the removal will substantially help her overall health.  The tonsils were enlarged, but not on the same scale as the adenoids.

Luckily for us our good friend & bishop of our ward is an anesthesiologist, and happened to be working at the hospital this morning and picked up Sydney's surgery.  If we had thought about it, we would have asked for him specifically.  He was able to calmly take Sydney back into the OR without any major hassle.  He is also her friend's dad which helps a lot!   She woke up a bit grumpy & in pain so she got  some painkillers and antibiotics and after a struggle over her IV, she finally dropped off into a fairly calm sleep.  She would wake up every hour or so for some water but slept for 4 1/2 hours overall. When she finally woke up, she had a popsicle half, some more water, and another dose of painkillers, milder this time, and some more antibiotics.  She also got her iv out, which meant she could get her favorite "stripy tiger" pjs on.  There was a bit of an issue at the beginning of the day about the hospital pjs they wanted her to wear, and even the tigers on the pjs could not make her happy. We can expect bad breath, a sore throat, somewhat cranky behavior, and a major lack of interest or need for food.  She had a tiny amount of chocolate pudding tonight for dinner, but it didn't stay down. We are going to leave the soft solids for another day. She is in bed right now.  I am hoping that she will sleep well tonight.  The doctor recommended she stay home from school for a week, which is sad, but hopefully we will muddle through!!

More inner ear issues

On the 19th I took Sydney to see the CHKD ENT department.  We spent the entire morning there cleaning her ears, meeting with Doctors and getting an XRay then meeting with the doctor again.  Sydney was a trooper.  She didn't start to complain about the long waits until the very end! The bottom line is that the doctors were most concerned about the adenoids size that they saw in the XRay, than the ear tubes idea.  So in another week, (April 3rd) she is going to go in for some surgery.  She will be getting her adenoids & tonsils out, and possibly getting ear tubes out in, but they won't know until they do the others.  So it is more along the lines of what had to happen with Emily, but the tonsils are a new thing. I am a little worried about the recovery, because of the tonsils, but hope it goes well afterwards.  She should be able to hear better because she will have better drainage.  They are not sure if she has allergies to something, or if she is just irritated sinus wise because things can't drain.  Her nose is apparently "small"

100th day of school

So this actually happened two Mondays ago, but I kept forgetting to post it. Emily & Sydney had the 100th day of school recently, and there was all sorts of fun stuff happening. We counted out 100 pennies to rbing in to school-you could bring in 100 of whatever you wanted, but Em chose pennies. And she counted them herself!! Yeah Emily!

But at school they made paper crowns, and posters where they filled in the number 100 with fruit loops that they glued down to the paper. My children decided it would be fun to eat the loose fruit loops in the bag. I pointed out that they had glue on them, but that didn't slow either one down. I didn't keep track of the bag or the paper after we got home, but when I saw it right before dinner, the paper had no fruit loops left and the bag was empty. Mmmmm. Elmers glue & fruit loops! My favorite!!!
